Job Description:
The Registered Nurse is responsible for coordinating and providing individualized quality patient care based on the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Nurse (RN) delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, assesses, plans, implements, and documents the effects of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the RN are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing. The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.

Job Qualifications:
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.

Performs in-depth, systematic assessment of all elective surgery patients who are to be seen in P.A.T.2.

Initiates patient teaching regarding surgery and/or procedures. Initiates clinical pathways if indicated and works collaboratively with Care Management. 3.

Formulates collaborates plan of care and identifies expected patient outcomes. 4.

Implements, evaluates and documents patient care interventions and effectiveness. 5.

Organizes, coordinates and prioritizes patient care utilizing available resources.6.

Interviews patients in P.A.T. Department and completes Admission Data Base, Preanesthesia Checklist and those forms specific to procedures. 7.

Ensures that appropriate lab test results are obtained prior to surgery; reports abnormals to anesthesiologist and/or surgeon. 8.

Accepts telephone orders from physician.9.

Performs venipuncture if indicated and obtains ordered lab tests.10.

Performs EKG if indicated and forwards to Cardiology Department for interpretation. 11.

Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treatment. 12.

Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). 13.

Complies with established chain of command for work related problems. 14.

Maintains confidentiality of all materials handles within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.

Participates in identifying department needs and support department goals and objectives that contribute to the growth of surgical services product line. 16.

Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding safety, attendance and dress code. 17.

Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in inservices and/or continuing education programs. 18.

Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to coworkers. 19.

Takes active role in department based quality programs. 20.

Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/process, and Safety.21.

Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Other related duties as assigned.

Assist with secretarial skills

Enter information into computer system and make updates or changes as necessary.

Assist with filing of paperwork as needed.

Greet and direct patients and visitors.

Offers suggestions to the Manager of the P.A.T. Center which may improve services in the department.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; 6 hours at a time. Walk 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, push and carry objects up to 10 lbs. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair. Frequently stoop and bend. Occasionally reach above shoulder level. Occasional use of hands/fingers for data entry. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to normal vision. Speaking as it relates to normal conversation.

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
At risk for cuts and punctures, being confined to small spaces, slippery surfaces, assault and battery, radiation, chemical and biohazards, injuries from operating machinery, burns, and back injuries. Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
Follow MSDS and OSHA precautions for exposure to biological and chemical hazards. Personal protective equipment, goggles, gloves.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY:
Using the nursing process to provide individualized, professional nursing care to patients. Coordinating and obtaining all necessary data to accurately complete the patient’s medical record prior to surgery. Page 3

SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):
Supervised the Nurse Manager of the P.A.T. Center or designee. Supervises care delivered by ancillary personnel.

COMMUNICATIONS:
Must be able to communicate with other departments, patients, families, the community, and the medical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS) (MINIMUM)

EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Successful completion of BLS; completion of a basic EKG course encouraged; ACLS encouraged; basic computer skills preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Full time â€" 40 hours/week. Flexible hours â€" Monday through Friday.
