SUMMARY
A surgical technologist serves as a member of the Surgical Services team, working under the direction of the registered nurse and in cooperation with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other ancillary personnel in delivering pat ient care assuming appropriate responsibilities pre-operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively. Key customers of this position includes: patients, surgeons, anesthesiologists, Operating Room staff, and other Surgical Services staff.
EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of two years experience. We do all cases, minus neuro. The tech would be expected to operate independently on all procedures except Open Heart. In saying this, the majority of the cases are going to be general(mainly laparoscopic), some bariatric, ortho spine(relief in the evening and possibly to do a full case that is standard as in a laminectomy), vascular both open and endovascular, gynecology(we also do have a Davinci Robot), cesarean sections, local/iv sed procedures, urology(no robot used in this service), ENT(we have the Medtronic Navigation system), and orthopedics(total joints, sports med, and fractures).

MINIMUM COMPETENCIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assumes the scrub and circulating role under the supervision of the RN Circulator in the OR suite.
2. Verifies that necessary instruments, supplies and equipment are present and operational prior to the beginning of a procedure.
3. Possesses expert knowledge of and maintains the highest possible standard of aseptic technique.
4. Monitors the sterile field observing the aseptic technique of team members to identify deviations from standard.
5. Organizes sterile field in such a manner that items can be readily and safely accessed, facilitating timely and safe execution of duties.
6. Demonstrates knowledge of ste p-by-step progress of specific surgical procedures.
7. Maintains work environment in a manner conducive to safe, efficient transfer to relief personnel.
8. Maintains awareness of location of all items including instruments, sponges, and needles during procedure, and completes counts according to protocol under the direction of the RN Circulator.
9. Verifies with RN medications received on sterile field and labels appropriately. Communicates quantities given to ensure accuracy of clinical documentation.
10. Anticipates and meets needs of the surgical team.
11. Collaborates with RN Clinical Coordinator and Technologist Lead to update surgeon’s resource map regarding set-up, suture, and special technique as needed.
12. Assists RN with circulating responsibilities as delegated according to protocol.
13. Monitors and cares for surgical specimens according to Physician’s orders and established hospital procedure.
14. Supports and contributes to the organization, cleanliness, and safety of the department.
15. Plans appropriate breaks and lunches in conjunction with team members and according to the demands of the room schedule.
16. Notifies when leaving the clinical area. Seeks clearance from OR Charge Nurse and/or Assistant Nurse Manager before leaving the surgical department.
17. Accepts changes in working assignment in a positive manner.
18. Utilizes time between procedure assignments in a productive manner, proactively assisting with execution of other cases and/or departmental maintenance activities.
19. Flexes working hours to meet the needs of the department.
20. Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-conscious manner and initiates charging mechanisms per protocol.
21. Prepares and cares for surgical instruments and equipment in a professional manner, utilizing prescribed methods and techniques.
22. Washings, disassembles, disinfection, sterilizing and/or storing instruments and supplies as necessary.
23. Prioritizes job duties appropriately, seeking guidance for the RN Circulator, Team Leadership, or Charge Nurses when indicated.
24. Supports and contributes to a spirit of teamwork, consideration, and cooperation.
25. Functions in a professional manner in all aspects of surgical care during both routine and special duties and procedures.
26. Safeguards all confidential information and knowledge concerning individual patients.
27. Identifies emergency situations and notifies other members of the surgical team and their existence.
28. Demonstrates initiative in expanding knowledge of new surgical procedures and subjects relating to the operating room and to the surgical patient.
29. Promote personal growth, effectiveness, and satisfaction by participating in in-service programs, meetings and/or workshops.
30. Acts as a resource person in areas of expertise, using prescribed materials and techniques to train others as assigned.
