BASIC FUNCTION: The ST/CST (Surgical Technician (ST)/Certified Surgical Technician (CST) is a member of the surgical team who works with surgeons/physicians, anesthesiologists, CRNA's, and RN's in delivering patie! nt care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. ST/CST functions include responsibility for maintaining the integrity, safety, and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure. Knowledge of and experience with aseptic and sterile techniques qualify the ST/CST to prepare and arrange instruments and supplies, and to assist the surgeon throughout the surgical procedure by providing the sterile instruments and sterile supplies required.

Surgical problems may range from those requiring limited, minor surgery to those requiring major, complex surgery. The CST/ST must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical, psychological, and educational development and the safety of children (infants to 12 years of age), adolescents (12 years of age to 18 years), adults (18 years of age to 65 years), and elderly adults (65 years of age and above). These skills and knowledge ! may be gained through education, training, or experience. !

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: All employees will be held accountable to the IU Health White Memorial Standard of Service that is defined by Service Excellence

KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION:

Graduate of a surgical technology program or its equivalent accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education

and Accreditation (CAHEA) or other avenue of entry otherwise acceptable to the Liaison Council on Certification for

the Surgical Technologist

Current certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists is preferred, or the candidate may validate and equivalent combination of education and experience with skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position

Certifications:

a. Current Health Care Provider CPR certification required

b. Education/training in the use of surgical instruments! on tissues versus the handling of instruments through a formal education program, continuing education, preceptorship, or any combination of these methods.

c. Certification by the AST is preferred with the completion of 80 CEU’s in 6 years to maintain certification

Basic understanding of Erickson’s theory of eight stages of development

Ability to assume on call responsibilities and respond within 20-30 minutes of contact

Ability to perform under pressure in stressful and emergency situations

Manual dexterity, fine motor coordination, and physical stamina with the ability to work quickly, but accurately

Oriented to detail, yet able to integrate a number of activities according to priority

Clinical competence in the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric clinical skills specifically identified on the unit CST Surgical Assistant skills checklist

Willingness to learn and work under close s! upervision

Ability to work with professional personnel, nonpr! ofessional personnel and personnel from other disciplines in a unified team approach

Willingness to attend educational programs

Good health and hygiene practices

Genuine interest in patients and co-workers as demonstrated by timeliness, flexibility, and attendance when scheduled, including weekends and holidays

Ability to occasionally work irregular hours as needed for provision of safe patient care, i.e., emergency surgery

Ability and willingness to learn computer skills
