Job Description:
The Advance Practice Nurse (APN) is a licensed registered nurse who has graduate preparation (a master's or doctorate) in nursing as a CNS, CNM, CRNA or NP. The APN is a clinical expert in theory-based and/or research-based nursing practice within a specialty area and who does the following:
Uses appropriate critical thinking skills to make independent decisions, commensurate with the autonomy, authority, and responsibility of the APN.
Integrates knowledge of disease, medical treatments, and nursing needs, focusing on illness and wellness experiences (symptoms, functional problems, risk behaviors, and capability) that require nursing interventions to prevent, maintain, or alleviate.
Designs, implements, and evaluates population-based programs of care by integrating nursing interventions and medical treatments, as appropriate, to en! hance patient outcomes cost-effectively.
Serves as a ! leader/consultant/mentor/change agent in advancing the practice of nursing to achieve quality, cost-effective patient outcomes within and across specialty populations.
Leads multidisciplinary groups in designing and implementing solutions that address system problems and/or patient care issues across the continuum of care.
Requires knowledge of the behaviors, developmental stages, physical and emotional needs, life cycle changes, culture, and comfort and care appropriate to the population served. Populations served by the department are identified in the department's scope of service.
Job Qualifications:
1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a master's degree in nursing
2. Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Indiana, or eligible for Indiana licensure
3. Current qualifications to practice as an advance practice nurse in the state of Indiana
a. Function within the lega! l boundaries of their advanced practice area and shall have and utilize knowledge of the statutes and rules governing their advanced practice areas, including the following: state and federal drug laws and regulations, state and federal confidentiality laws and regulations as well as state and federal medical records access laws
b. Recognize the limits of individual knowledge and experience, and consult with or refer clients to other health care providers as appropriate.
c. Retain professional accountability for any delegated intervention, and delegate interventions only as authorized by the state of Indiana.
Demonstrated expertise in the practice or nursing.
Maintain current knowledge and skills in their specialty area.
4. Successful completion of certification within 1 year of employment.
5. Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills and evidence of ability to function in a consultative and educational role.
