The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary care services, including assessing and managing patients in the facility following established standards and policies. Applicants must have knowledge of the behaviors, developmental stages, physical and emotional needs, life cycle changes, culture, and comfort and care appropriate to the population served.
The NP is a licensed registered nurse who has graduate preparation (a master's or doctorate) in nursing as a CNS, CNM, CRNA or NP. The NP is also a clinical expert in theory-based and/or research-based nursing practice within a specialty area and who does the following:
Uses appropriate critical thinking skills to make independent decisions, commensurate with the autonomy, authority, and responsibility of the APN. Integrates knowledge of disease, medical treatments, and nursing needs, focusing on illness and wellness experiences (symptoms, functional problems, risk behaviors, and capability) that require nursing interventions to prevent, maintain, or alleviate. Designs, implements, and evaluates population-based programs of care by integrating nursing interventions and medical treatments, as appropriate, to enhance patient outcomes cost-effectively. Serves as a leader/consultant/mentor/change agent in advancing the practice of nursing to achieve quality, cost-effective patient outcomes within and across specialty populations. Leads multidisciplinary groups in designing and implementing solutions that address system problems and/or patient care issues across the continuum of care. Requires knowledge of the behaviors, developmental stages, physical and emotional needs, life cycle changes, culture, and comfort and care appropriate to the population served. Populations served by the department are identified in the department's scope of service.
